Cables can also loosen or stretch from use so that the clutch doesn t fully release when the pedal is pushed all the way in. There is a threaded sleeve with two nuts on it at the protruding end of the cable. The only downside to a cable clutch is that if you own your car for a long time the cables will eventually wear and stretch and could even break. Many fords such as the fiesta cortina mk5 and escort mk3 have a self adjusting clutch cable.

But if the clutch cable is stretched too. The cable connects the clutch pedal pivot directly to the release fork eliminating practically all of the wear points that are found in shaft and lever linkages. Once the clutch is disengaged you can shift the gears of the transmission safely. To release the cable first disconnect it at the clutch housing end. Locate the clutch cable which loops down from the clutch pedal to protrude through the clutch operating lever. Too little clutch pedal play leads to clutch slip but too much clutch pedal play can lead to clutch drag. Loose cables can often be adjusted but some may need to be replaced.

Then find the cable nipple where it sticks out between the quadrant and pawl. The clearance is the difference between the cable measurement when the operating lever is at rest and when it is pushed inwards. When you press down on the clutch pedal it causes the cable to pull on the linkage so that the clutch becomes disengaged.
